Tropical flower used in Chinese medicine, patchouli arrived in Europe in the middle of the 19th century by chance, its leaves being used to wrap cashmere during its transport, impregnating it with their smell. Widely used in the 1970s, its woody and slightly earthy essence is found in many contemporary feminine or masculine perfumes. Note that only the essence of patchouli has this characteristic sweet smell, the fresh plant being perfectly odorless.
